Battle fought 1 Jul 1690 in E Ireland, in
which James II was defeated by William III
and fled to France. It was the decisive
battle of the War of English Succession,
confirming a Protestant monarch. It took its
name from the river Boyne in the Republic of
Ireland 113 km/70 mi long, flowing past
Drogheda into the Irish Sea.
